Background
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) commissioned Project Centre to extend their previously implemented 20mph limit scheme across the whole borough, excluding the main roads. Our team surveyed the entire borough to determine suitable sign and road marking locations.
One of the key objectives was to minimise clutter and visual intrusion of the 20mph signs and road markings. RBKC has a strong aesthetic appeal, and it was important to keep their identity consistent.
Process
Project Centre produced a detailed scheme to introduce the 20mph limit, including:
- A signing and road marking schedule with signs and road marking technical specifications
- Locations for terminal signs and road marking
- A Bill of Quantities to produce a cost estimate for the required materials
- Project management of the design process and liaison with Transport for London and adjoining boroughs
- Production of the Experimental Traffic Order by listing all included streets
Outcome
The 20mph limit aided the reduction in overall vehicle speeds allowing increased pedal and cyclists usage within the borough.
The main challenge for the client was being able to get residents’ support even though they were not particularly pro-cycling. Following their consultation, we have proposed suitable measures and encouraged many residents to actively take on sustainable travel.
