Project Centre attended the Emissions and Air Quality Smart Classes in London.
Marston Holdings Director of Environment Nick Ruxton-Boyle presented “Data Led Air Quality Improvement and Transport Decarbonisation”. He discussed how data lead to improvements through smart technology and digital enforcement.
According to Public Health England, “approximately 29,000 deaths per year in the UK could be attributable to man-made particulate matter pollution”. In London alone, nearly 9,500 people die early each year due to long-term exposure to air pollution. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs estimates the annual cost to the UK economy at about £16 billion.
With reference to real-world public-sector case studies, Nick demonstrated how the use of data can justify preferred options to combat emissions. Data can validate outcomes, maximise return on scheme investment, and overall improve air quality.
Alongside cleaning the air, transport decarbonisation is driving more public sector investment decisions. There are new and innovative digital solutions, which are in conjunction with maintaining concerns such as congestion, safety and equality.
We’re excited to learn more about how date improve our active travel and decarbonising measures within our own projects.
