Background
The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (LBHF) commissioned Project Centre for the Hammersmith Grove scheme, which aimed to transform the LBHF into the “greenest borough in the country”.
This scheme explores the potential of introducing light-touch streetscape elements to reinvigorate the identity of Hammersmith’s town centre. The scheme’s scale includes the introduction of multiple parklets in a relatively small area, maximising the sense of “overnight transformation”. The installation of kerb alignment and new electric vehicles charging points also contribute to traffic reduction and promote a more sustainable urban environment.
How did we create green spaces in Hammersmith Grove?
Project Centre provided a wide range of services, including project management, public realm design, transport planning and highways engineering. We helped with:
- Limit access to the section of Hammersmith Grove to zero emission capable vehicles only
- Provide suitable infrastructure that supports a range of electric vehicles including private, car share, as well as taxis and buses
- Address the serious use of air quality and pollutant levels by creating a more sustainable and cleaner Hammersmith
- Instalment of new planting area as well as seating spaces and traffic calming elements
- Provide assessment findings and accessibility audit
- Engagement with the community, presenting our projects and listening carefully to their concerns
Outcome
The scheme provided better facilities for cyclists, pedestrians and visitors. We have seen an increase in green spaces and number of people gathering within the LBHF’s outdoor spaces and deciding to opt for sustainable transportation. Our scheme supports part of a borough-wide plan to increase biodiversity and help reducing air pollutants. In summary, our measures are making the LBHF a healthier and safer place to live.
“The parklets project is a great opportunity to make our office surroundings greener as well as giving back to the H&F community. Hammersmith has been Medidata’s European headquarters for many years, as it provides superb access to talent, a world-class infrastructure and the UK life sciences ecosystem. Providing the best and most sustainable working environment is something we, and our more than 200 London-based colleagues, focus on every day.”
— Christian Hebenstreit, Medidata General Manager & Senior Vice President EMEA
“What a great idea. The last-mile courier and other green initiatives mentioned here. These will surely help tackle our awful air pollution and that area’s dominance by traffic.
Thank you.”
