Background
The London Borough of Waltham Forest (LBWF) commissioned Project Centre to deliver a flood alleviation proposal for Brooke Road, Oliver Road, Chestnut Avenue North, Chestnut Avenue South and St. Mary’s Church of England Primary School.
This involved introducing Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) features to slow down and control surface water run-off, improving water quality, providing retention of rainfall as well as reducing risk of local flooding.
Process
Our flood and water management team helped the Council to:
- Ensure that all constraints were taken into account. These included flood risk, utilities, construction timings and access routes during construction.
- Discuss with utility companies to ensure that the design could be implemented with the correct safety measures.
- Engage with the local community, primary schools and other key stakeholders to develop suitable flood risk mitigation measures for the area
- Produce a sustainable design that can provide benefits to the community.
- Develop a design which reduces flood risk in the area, as well as improves biodiversity and improves the amenity value
Impact of our flood alleviation schemes
The design included permeable paving, rain gardens and attenuation tanks to provide significant storage for the area. For the modelled catchment, this design would attenuate flows to the 1 in 100 year plus 40% climate change rainfall event. This ensured that the Council could maintain safe access routes for the school even during the most intense rainfall events.
