The Coulgate Street scheme has transformed a once congested, vehicle-dominated road into a welcoming, people-first space adjacent to Brockley Station. The project aimed to rebalance priorities away from through-traffic and towards walking, cycling, and public transport. Overall, creating a safer, more attractive environment that reflects the needs of the local community.Â
Innovative infrastructure
The scheme introduced widened footways, safer pedestrian crossings, improved cycle facilities. As well as a high-quality public realm with new seating, planting, and lighting. Vehicle access was restricted, reducing conflict and congestion, while creating a calmer, low-traffic environment. By reimagining how space is allocated, the design delivers a functional but attractive gateway to one of south London’s busiest stations.Â
Community engagement
The project was shaped in close collaboration with residents, businesses, and local groups through a series of consultations and workshops. This engagement ensured the design addressed genuine community needs. From safer crossings for schoolchildren to improved accessibility for older people and those with mobility impairments. By involving the community at each stage, the scheme built strong local support and empowered people to take ownership of their streets.Â

Outcomes
- Increased Active Travel: Early monitoring shows significant growth in walking and cycling trips to and from Brockley Station, reducing reliance on private cars.Â
- Enhanced safety: Reduced traffic volumes and safer pedestrian crossings have cut the risk of collisions and made the street more inclusive for vulnerable users.Â
- Environmental gains: Lower traffic has helped improve air quality and contributed to Bromley’s climate commitments by encouraging more sustainable travel choices.Â
- Health and wellbeing: The calmer environment encourages physical activity, while green infrastructure and seating provide opportunities for rest, social interaction, and community cohesion.Â
- Economic uplift: A more pleasant, pedestrian-friendly environment has benefitted local businesses by increasing footfall and dwell time.Â
Integration with wider transport network
Coulgate Street acts as the front door to Brockley Station, directly improving connections between active modes and rail. The scheme strengthens integration with the wider transport network, making walking and cycling the natural choice for last-mile journeys. By demonstrating how reallocating road space can support sustainable modes, it sets a precedent for long-term behavioural change.Â
