The Problem
● We have been working with the DVLA for many years enforcing against un taxed vehicles on our public roads across the UK. We use a number of enforcement tools and techniques including wheel clamps.
● Whilst undertaking a regular review of the contract we identified that we used an incredible amount of these clamps every year and that they were being made abroad and transported to the UK by sea.
● As part of our net zero pledge and carbon reduction planning we identified that there was a significant saving to be made and vowed to take swift action.
The Solution
● We started talking with our client DVLA and our supplier Lyreco. When we discovered we all have ambitious carbon reduction targets and plans, we then sought to identity a joint solution.
Lyreco looked to their local UK supply chain and identified a suitable partner to manufacture the clamps in the UK.
● They decided to work with Rototherm and moved manufacture to their established manufacturing facility in South Wales, which uses 100% renewable energy.
● The transition to low carbon UK made clamps was seamless and are now in operation across the country helping support our enforcement activities for the DVLA.
Benefits
● An impressive carbon saving of 70 tonnes per year in transport alone.
● Several new full time jobs created in South Wales where the clamps are now manufactured.
● Better relationship with one of our strategic clients and supplier and more carbon saving projects identified.
Key to success
● The key to success was our early engagement and alignment of our carbon saving ambitions with our supplier and our good working relationship. This alongside the maturity of the relationship with our client and our continual review of the environmental benefits of contract.
