Dartford Borough Council commissioned Project Centre to create a space to home an integral art installation celebrating two members of the Rolling Stones.
Dartford Borough Council created the project to celebrate the musical achievements of two Dartfordians, Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
Sculpture Amy Goodman created the bronze sculptures, dubbed The Glimmer Twins. They capture Sir Mick singing into a microphone mid-movement while Richards slashes on his guitar.
As part of the wider public realm improvement scheme, we designed a new intimate public space. The site is designed with the rock heroes in mind, creating stage like space with spotlights illuminating the statues. We also installed new lighting to highlight the existing mural.
The backdrop of the space is an amazing 80m2 green wall, containing 8,000 plants. 60% of the selected plants will improve biodiversity, 30% will assist in air purification and 10% in Biophilia values.
A low granite wall edges the space, providing incidental seating and an open and pleasant meeting space between friends. The versatile and inclusive space will be a place for small events that can incorporate tables and chairs for alfresco dining.
This new focal point celebrates the two local legends in a befitting way that also adds to the environment and town. The space incorporates ramp access and handrails opening the space to be an inviting and inclusive place.
Dartford Council Leader Jeremy Kite said: “I’ve had overwhelmingly good responses to it today. I think there’s a surprise that actually they’re so kind of animated and dynamic, the statues, and I think that’s a really nice thing”.
