Project Centre attended the water management Smart Class, speaking of how to alleviate flood risks with sustainable drainage systems (SuDs).
Principal Civil Engineer, Javier Soto, and Technical Director for Highways, Michelle Hope, discussed our methodology for mitigating the disastrous impact of flooding across the country.
How SuDs can mitigate flood risks and the impact of climate change
By all means, climate change is worsening flood risks across the UK. As a result of that, the government made funding available to tackle the effects of flooding on the community and environment.
At Project Centre, we set measures that reduce flood risks whilst providing an opportunity to improve biodiversity, ecology and water quality. Above all, our measures are tailored to the needs of the community and the local environment.
We work with private and public sector clients, supporting them to:
- Design attenuation pods
- Filter out water to enhance its quality
- Calculate storage volume and increase the areas’ capacity to hold water
- Install amenities across the area, for example new seating and greening spaces
- Introduce more biodiversity, new planting and meadow areas
- Design and implement rain gardens to reduce flooding risks
Our sustainable drainage systems are cost-effective and provide benefits for everyone. By increasing recreational areas and reducing the carbon footprint, we improve the wellbeing of people as well as the environment.
We’ve recently worked to install SuDs and rain gardens across Eastcote Town Centre. The area would previously flood with 18mm of rain landing in one hour. Now, the site can accommodate up to 30mm of rainfall.
The scheme is helping to revitalise the area and improve Eastcote town centre for both people and wildlife. Read the full case study here.
The water management Smart Class
We enjoyed speaking at the well attended water management Smart Class. The round table and networking sessions enriched the experience and we were able to discuss in more detail problems that local communities were facing with flooding.
The slides and the recording of our presentation are now available to check out on demand.
