Recently, we spent some time with him, chatting about his career path and how he started his journey in the civil engineering industry.
Q: Tell us a bit about your career path, how did you get into the industry and why?
A: Civil engineering was a long-term vision for me. From my time at college and then throughout my career, I wanted to get involved in the built environment and shape how it developed.
I was attracted to transportation and interested in the process of making things, what it takes to get there and the challenges we face. I find it all fascinating, everything from public transport, the roads we use, the trains that take us to work and emerging technologies such as electric vehicles and e-bikes.
Highways and the detail that goes into their construction not only interests me, but it excites me still to this day. I’m involved in small urban schemes, complex and impactful rural schemes, changing landscapes, and connecting people. This variety is what makes me glad to do what I do. The schemes we develop benefit communities, which is something that I love doing and long may it continue.
Q: What do you enjoy the most about your career path, and within Project Centre in particular?
A: I enjoy being the person in between clients and the team at Project Centre, between contractors and the public. Project management allows me to direct projects to successful completion and to problem solve. Being the relationship broker allows me to truly engage with people to deliver something they will love.
I enjoy teaching younger engineers how to develop designs that will truly cater to the client’s needs. My job at Project Centre allows me to talk to lots of different people and those younger than me. It’s great seeing how I can push them forward to reach their own goals and help them towards things like chartership.
Q: What is your favourite Project Centre project and why?
A: My favourite project is Innovation Park Medway for the Medway Council, because it allows me to work with other disciplines and colleagues.
I understand the challenges they all face, which helps me to engage with all types of colleagues and clients. I love seeing how all of us have different drivers in our careers, but we can all develop to be something we’re proud of.
Q: Can you share a piece of career advice for new starters?
A: Never be afraid to ask questions, even the ones that you think are stupid can help someone. People get caught up trying to make a good impression and they often forget to simply understand what they are doing. That understanding of things can follow you right from the start of your career.
Also, don’t underestimate the power of a smaller company and the opportunities it can give you. Larger institutions seem exciting and glamourous but having a vital role working on schemes has far greater benefit to your career than being one of a number working on a project that no one will remember.
