Local authorities in England have until 12pm Monday 22 August and Mayoral Combined Authorities until 12pm Friday 26 August to submit their high-level self-assessment for their share of £500m active travel funding.
Active Travel England (ATE) has contacted local authorities directly with information on the funding which will support capital and revenue schemes between 2022-2025.
There are four sections to the self-assessment which includes rating each section between 0-5. Local authorities with ratings of 3 or 4 are more likely to receive more funding. The sections are:
- Background information
- Local leadership and support
- Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIP) development
- Schemes delivered
Key dates
- 1 August – Local authorities contacted by ATE regarding funding available
- 22 August – Deadline for local authorities to submit their high-level self-assessment on Smart Survey
- 26 August – Deadline for Mayoral Combined Authorities to submit their high-level self-assessment on Smart Survey

Active Travel England
Active Travel England (ATE) is the Government’s cycling and walking body and has been set up to improve cycling and walking infrastructure across the country. ATE is also responsible for managing budgets and awarding funding for projects relating to active travel.
Further to this, ATE is supporting improvements across the country which were highlighted in the Department for Transport’s, Gear Change report, the Government’s plan to make
