Flood and water management
Project Centre’s flood and water management team is passionate about providing solutions that deliver multiple benefits for people, nature and the built environment. We work with public and private sector clients to support their needs through assessing and designing flood alleviation schemes, drainage and green infrastructure, as well as planning processes and public consultations.
Water is a precious resource. With a rising population and the prospect of climate change causing more extreme weather, the need for resilient water and flood risk infrastructure has never been more urgent.
Project Centre has extensive experience in designing and utilising SuDS to provide drainage systems that are not only effective, but also provide a more sustainable alternative to traditional drainage systems.
Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) offer an alternative to hard engineered drainage by working with and mimicking natural processes to store and treat storm water. As well as reducing flood risk, SuDS features are also capable of enhancing places for people and wildlife.
SuDS come in a variety of forms, such as:
- Swales
- Rain gardens
- Ponds and Wetlands
- Bioretention systems
- Infiltration systems
- Filter strips and drains
- Detention basins
- Attenuation storage
Project Centre can assist with the selection and design of the most effective SuDS measures, helping to manage surface water in a more environmentally sustainable and cost-effective way.
Project Centre boasts an expert team with experience in a wide range of software packages, allowing for assessment and mapping of areas at risk of flooding from surface water, groundwater, rivers and sewers.
Project Centre’s engineers have experience with industry standard hydraulic modelling software packages such as:
- Microdrainage
- InfoDrainage
- InfoWorks ICM
- TUFLOW
- Flood Modeller
From catchment-scale flood maps, to assessing community rain gardens, Project Centre’s capabilities with various modelling tools allows for delivery of highly intricate systems designed for any scale. Project Centre is always looking to provide expertly designed solutions, with our flood modelling and mapping capabilities being necessary to this.
Project Centre can conduct in-depth feasibility studies and design for flood risk management schemes in a wide range of contexts, from initial investigation through to detailed design. We can make use of our hydraulic modelling expertise to evaluate the impact of proposed interventions and properties protected from flooding. We also help secure scheme support from stakeholders through public consultations and funding applications.
These services can be tailored for any project and can be used in tandem with Project Centre’s multidisciplinary teams to provide expertly designed solutions where necessary.
We are capable of drawing upon our expertise to provide flood alleviation schemes than consider requirements for maintenance, total cost, provision of amenities and use of space. We adhere to national and local planning regulations all without compromising on performance.
We seek to deliver schemes that not only provide well engineered solutions to flood risk, but also enhance local amenities and space, without conceding on performance.
We hold extensive experience in preparing flood risk assessments and drainage strategies to secure planning consent for developments. Our team have undertaken this role for simple small-scale residential developments, to multi-phase mixed use development. Project Centre aims to deliver effective, high quality flood risk assessments and drainage strategies that draw upon all available information to provide the most well-informed decisions and solutions.
Competencies include:
- Providing technical support for flood risk solutions
- Providing expert advice in securing planning permission for applications to LLFA’s
- Demonstrating compliance with national, regional and local flood risk planning policies
- Developing Flood Evacuation Plans
- Drawing upon in-house capabilities to provide project specific drainage requirements
- Delivering results efficiently without compromising breadth and depth of knowledge
Project Centre delivers development control services for a number of lead local flood authorities, reviewing major and minor planning applications to ensure compliance with sustainable drainage and flood risk policies. This provides us with an unrivalled understanding of the requirements of local authorities relating to flood risk and surface water drainage.
We also prepare policy and guidance documents including Strategic Flood Risk Assessments, Surface Water Management Plans and Supplementary Planning Documents.
In addition, we have experience undertaking Section 19 Flood Investigation reports for our clients following flooding which triggers their thresholds for investigation.
This breadth of experience allows Project Centre to be confident in providing expert guidance for planning throughout the United Kingdom. Our experience with a range of lead local flood authorities allows us to be capable of tailoring guidance to local and regional needs.
