Background
The London Borough of Hillingdon commissioned Project Centre to identify areas in the borough that would benefit from the implementation of 20mph zones.
Throughout the scheme, we ensured that the measures we provided allowed for the legal introduction of a 20mph zone, which has different requirements to a 20mph limit. This involved close reference to industry standards, including Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions and the latest versions of the Traffic Signs Manuals.
Hillingdon borough 20mph zone process
Our multidisciplinary team worked collaboratively to:
- Investigate the site and current provisions
- Identify suitable sign locations for the new 20mph zone
- Design traffic calming measures for the area
- Create bus compatible traffic calming measures for bus routes that went through Ickenham
- Provide cost estimates for the required work
- Provide 20mph zone drawings suitable for consultation with local residents
Outcomes
We provided the London Borough of Hillingdon with feasibility designs for traffic calming measures to support the proposed 20mph zones. These visual representations of the proposed measures aided the consultation with residents.
Following a new consultation phase, our traffic calming measures may be extended over different areas of the borough. Our designs respond to the Council’s objective to improve road safety as well as reduce pollution amongst their most trafficked streets.
