Medway Council launched the Safer, Healthier Streets Programme to cut congestion, improve air quality, and make streets safer. A key part was introducing School Streets, timed closures around schools to reduce traffic and encourage walking and cycling. As the first authority in Kent to trial ANPR-enforced School Streets, Medway needed support with feasibility, consultation, and design to deliver its ambitious plans.
Ou approach
Project Centre, with Marston Holdings, planned ten pilot School Streets using GIS mapping, site surveys, and AutoCAD designs.
Engagement was key — we worked with schools, councillors, parents, and residents through consultations and events. Following feedback, seven schools were taken forward, each with detailed designs for closures, enforcement, signage, and infrastructure. Community input shaped practical, widely supported solutions.
The results?
In March 2024, Medway launched its first seven School Streets, with strong political backing and positive media coverage, including BBC South East. The initiative has been welcomed for reducing congestion and creating safer, healthier environments for children and families.
By combining robust design with inclusive engagement, Medway has laid the foundation for expanding School Streets across the borough as part of its wider Safer, Healthier Streets programme.
