Background
Herefordshire Council appointed us to deliver a transport infrastructure scheme that would encourage a mode shift across the city active travel in the newly developed Hereford Enterprise Zone, contributing to its growth. The council identified promoting active travel as the best way to achieve this. Our design provided robust infrastructure improvements within the city to the designated Hereford Enterprise Zone, a key employment and education area of the city.
The project included of 44 schemes across 12 routes to improve the continuity, legibility, attractiveness and level of general provision of routes. The scope included minor treatments such as upgrading signage and road markings and more significant road alterations and junction reconfigurations such as upgrading a roundabout to priority junction and introducing new cycle priority crossings.
Process
The scope of this ongoing project includes developing of the quiet route improvements. The improvements are in accordance with LTN 1/20 government guidelines for cycle infrastructure design, from feasibility through to detail design.
Upon reviewing the feasibility of the initial outline design and as a result of our routine gap analysis process, our design team developed alternative design proposals. These offered improvements and additional benefits. Understanding the added value, these additional options were developed into a detailed design.
In advance of the public consultation process, we engaged with councillors, presented and discussed the design proposals. During this key process we collected valuable feedback and useful insights. These were based on local knowledge which helped enhance the detailed design.
By all means, this project made use of our multidisciplinary teams, with input from our highways, traffic, landscape, drainage and urban design teams, together with our lighting and technology, and communication and engagement teams.
Impact of our active travel scheme
As a result of the project, client feedback has been very positive with recognition of the quality of the work produced. A particular mention to the effort required to meet the deadline submission.
The collaborative and productive oriented approach with our client made this a particularly enjoyable and successful project. By all means, we continue to work with Herefordshire Council on different projects, taking those valuable lessons into each scheme.
